The Eppler-Chavez connection began a decade ago, when Eppler scouted Chavez and helped the Yankees sign the third baseman in 2011. Chavez also has ties to Oakland, and thus Sandy Alderson, after spending 13 years with the A’s. Once Eppler landed the Angels’ GM job in 2015, he brought Chavez over from the Yankees to serve as his special assistant. A few years later, Chavez interviewed for the Angels managerial opening in 2018, a search that was conducted by Eppler and team owner Moreno. Though Chavez did not get the job, he still has a close relationship with Eppler. Chavez also recently interviewed with the Yankees for a coaching position, and his ties to Yankees’ GM Brian Cashman suggest that Eppler, who is said to view Cashman as a sort of mentor, would feel comfortable promoting Chavez and naming him as the Mets manager.
